The Chief Scientist at KKL-JNF is the supreme scientific authority in all scientific and professional aspects of the organization, and is in charge of planning the direction of the research activity of KKL-JNF.
The unit has professional relations with academic institutions, national and international research bodies, and represents KKL-JNF in professional and managerial forums, such as the COP.
The unit initiates and supports more than 100 long-term research projects annually in cooperation with leading research institutions.
In addition to climate change-related studies, the Chief Scientist Unit is responsible for ornithology projects, river and stream rehabilitation, forestry, and runoff management.
The climate crisis, a pressing global challenge, has taken top priority at KKL-JNF. The Chief Scientist Unit is in the process of establishing a Climate Crisis Center, with projects such as renewable energy initiatives already in the works. The center promotes two main pertinent areas: adaptation (preparation for extreme climate events) and mitigation (reduction and absorption of greenhouse gas emissions). The center’s activities will include instituting an intra-organizational sustainability code, ensuring the inclusion of climate crisis-related activities in all the organization’s divisions, and initiating and leading climate-related and relevant innovation projects. Moreover, the Unit supports researchers that focus on the impacts on climate change in Israel and ways to combat it.
