KKL-JNF invites you to join us in revitalizing one of southern Israel’s most cherished natural treasures – The Helmoniot Road in Yatir Forest. Located in the Negev in southern Israel, the Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael – Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) Yatir Forest is the largest planted forest in Israel, boasting an incredible diversity of flora, historical sites, and stunning landscapes that attract thousands of visitors year-round.
Experience the Magic of Helmoniot Road
Every late October to early November, the Helmoniot Road transforms into a golden spectacle as the Sternbergia flowers, known locally as the Helmonit, bloom in abundance. These golden-yellow, goblet-shaped flowers emerge on stalks, creating a breathtaking vista that heralds the onset of autumn and early winter. This vibrant display makes the Helmoniot Road a must-see destination for nature lovers.
Explore the Richness of Yatir Forest
Spanning 30,000 dunams, Yatir Forest is not just a natural wonder but also a historical treasure trove. Within its bounds lie ancient archaeological sites, panoramic observation points, and a network of hiking trails. The forest, home to over four million trees including conifers, broadleaf species, olive, fig, eucalyptus, and acacia trees, represents the KKL-JNF’s successful greening of a once barren land in Israel. The forest’s unique location on the lower slopes of the Hebron hills allows it to host a diverse mix of Mediterranean orchards and desert vegetation, providing a lush contrast to the surrounding arid landscape.
The Need for Renewal
After years of good use, the Helmoniot Road is in urgent need of renovation. Subsidence, landslides, and potholes pose safety risks to visitors and hamper access for foresters, farmers, and emergency services. A renewed road will ensure safe and smooth passage, preserving this vital artery for all who depend on it.
A Project of Greater Significance
This project has gained even more significance in recent months following the war in the north and the south, which has limited Israelis’ access to recreation sites near the combat zones. While the number of accessible open and natural spaces for regeneration has shrunk, the need has grown exponentially due to the stresses and anxieties generated by the war. The pressure on the available parks and recreation sites has increased significantly, and therefore, support for their development is paramount, particularly in these trying times. Support for this project does not stop at the site itself; it radiates to homes across Israel, helping Israelis endure the daily challenges and trials they face.
By supporting the renewal of Helmoniot Road, you contribute to the preservation and enhancement of a key part of Israel’s natural heritage. Your support will help maintain the forest’s infrastructure, ensuring it remains a safe and accessible haven for all visitors and essential personnel.
KKL-JNF invites you to support our operations in the Yatir Forest and around the magical and blooming Helmoniot Road. Embrace the beauty, support the renewal, and become a part of the Yatir Forest’s ongoing story of resilience and growth. Your contribution helps secure the future of this remarkable landscape for generations to come.
